They might look funny at first, but MBT shoes are designed to help keep you healthy and fit.

The shoes were created by a Swiss engineer, Karl Mueller, who suffered from severe back pain and realized the pain was caused by the way he walked. According to Mueller, “The human body is simply not built to walk or stand on hard, flat surfaces.” He realized that conventional shoes stabilize the body in such a way that the muscle structure loses its function, which results in joint and back pain.

So he decided upon a radical design, with a rounded sole that feels unstable at first. But the instability actually activates neglected muscles in your body to help improve your posture, protect your knees and joints, and tone your muscles—from your legs to your core—just by standing in a pair of the shoes.

Mueller called his shoes MBT for Masai Barefoot Technology, inspired by the way the Masai people of Kenya walk—barefoot on naturally uneven, soft terrain. It’s now a patented technology that enables the body to stand and walk in the way nature intended. Check out styles for men and women, such as the women’s Kaya, at  Swissmasai.com. Prices range from $240-$270.
