In his first appearance at the USA 100K championships, Michael Wardian of Arlington, Va. triumphed with a time of 6 hours, 56 minutes and 57 seconds.
The race was hosted by the Mad City 100K in Madison, Wis. on April 13.
Wardian allowed competitors Steve Stowers of Berkeley, Calif. and Adam Lint of Patton, Pa. to handle the pace work for the first 40 kilometers before moving into the lead just before the 50-kilometer mark. Over the remaining distance, Wardian continued to build his lead, and by the time he hit the tape, he had recorded a win by 17:31 over Stowers. Lint finished 4:32 later for third place.
Leading the women’s field was Carolyn Smith of Milwaukee, Wis., who took the championship in 8:25:26 for a 26:41 win over Connie Gardner of Medina, Ohio. Former two-time national champion Ann Heaslett of Madison, Wis. came in third at 9:40:37.
The national 100K championship was the second ultrarunning title of the year for Wardian, who also won the USA 50K championships last month. In addition to earning $2,000 each for their victories, Wardian and Smith earned spots on the U.S team going to the 100K World Cup race in Tuscania, Italy on November 8, 2008.
