The granddaddy of Mid-Atlantic triathlons is celebrating its silver anniversary.

The May 18 Olympic-distance event in Columbia, Md., will host more than 1,800 racers, ranging from local amateurs to international elites. After opting out of the 2007 edition, 2006 winner Matt Reid of Boulder, Colo., is expected to return to challenge his own course record of 1:51:46. Reid is also vying for a spot on the 2008 US Men's Olympic Triathlon Team. In addition to the elites, hundreds of amateurs will battle throughout the day in the typically chilly waters of Centennial Lake and the challenging scenic hills. www.tricolumbia.org
